Outdoor Education and State Tours:

Fourth, fifth, and sixth grades have been given the opportunities on a semester basis to participate in some very special activities.

Every October, our students have had the opportunity to attend a three-day camp retreat at Cedar Lake Camp located in Big Bear. In a program led by Lodestode Adventures, students have had opportunities to work on special activities designed to build teamwork and cooperation. Students were encouraged to set goals for themselves and try a variety of activities, including low ropes and high ropes courses, to achieve those goals.

Students stayed in heated cabins and enjoyed hot meals. They were carefully supervised and enjoyed a safe and secure environment. Recreation included ping-pong, basketball, field games, hiking, canoeing, or souvenir shopping in the camp store.

Every April, WPS students participated in state tours conducted in a three-year cycle by Family Excursions Tours. In the first year, students toured Sacramento, gold country, Sutter's Fort, and especially the State Capitol. The second year tour students toured San Francisco and Monterey including Alcatraz, various science museums, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and more. During the third year, students toured San Diego Harbor and its historical ships, as well as the Light House, San Diego Aquarium, and San Diego Wild Animal Park. These specialized tours gave the students an unforgettable, interactive experience of California’s rich history, diverse cultures and landscapes, and most importantly exploring and discovering new interests. Students stayed at quality hotels and enjoyed restaurant or fast food meals as a part of the tour.

These special activities for the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students from 2007-2009 allowed the students to bond with one another as well as teachers, while gaining a perspective of California history that will remain with them for a life time!
